We can see he is the antagonist as when they board the ship, he is the one who shoots the lock out to get to the cabin, and he is the one who is confronting Captain Phillips, asking him where the crew are and informing him that he is the captain now. The fact that he says he is in charge and the captain of the ship rather than either of the other two pirates shows he is the leader of the group.
